January 3 The Sun’s Page One headline January 4 about the police raid the night before on three local establishments was great: POLICE OPEN WAR ON NIGHT CLUB DRINKING.

January 13 Hedley Hipwell was returned for a fourth term as President of Greater Vancouver Tourist Association. Hipwell also headed the BC Automobile Association. Both groups shared directors.

March 21 Trans Mountain (later called Trans Mountain Pipeline) was incorporated. It will build a crude oil pipeline from Edmonton to its Burnaby Terminal. The first shipment of oil will reach the terminal October 17, 1953.

January The great American bass Paul Robeson had performed at the Orpheum February 7, 1946, and 3,000 fans in the sold-out theatre kept him coming back for more and more. But a hint of troubles ahead could be seen in the Sun’s warm review by Stanley Bligh.

January 6 Vancouver’s longest wet spell began. It ended 29 days later. There had been recorded rain on every one of those 29 days. (On the same subject: believe it or not, no fewer than five cities in Canada have an average annual precipitation higher than Vancouver’s paltry 1,113 mm.
