January 26 Actor Paul Johansson was born in Vancouver. He made a TV commercial sensation a few years ago as a hunky Coca-Cola delivery guy bringing a load of Coke into an office full of panting ladies.

January 11 A newspaper called the Vancouver Times appeared, with retired general Victor Odlum as publisher. The paper had a very short life.

January 3 Hollinger Inc. was incorporated. At its peak Conrad Black’s Hollinger Inc. Would control more than 150 dailies and 350 weeklies in Canada (including the Vancouver Sun and the Province), the United States, Britain, Israel and Australia.

February 17 Frederick J. Hume, mayor of New Westminster from 1933 to 1942 and of Vancouver from 1951 to 1958, died, aged 74. He was born May 2, 1892 in New Westminster.

January 12 UBC’s Music Building, part of the Norman Mackenzie Centre for Fine Arts, opened at a cost of $2.5 million. The School of Music was first headed by Dr. G. Welton Marquis, a master of music composition. Prior to 1968, the music department was located in army huts along the West Mall.
